We have boiler steam heat. Chip has to check the boiler every couple of days and fill it with water when needed. If it is overfilled it shuts off, if it is dry it can start a fire. It's a tedious system to say the least. Chip has given me many lessons on how to work the boiler. I reply each time.. Where are you going?! Why do I need to learn this?! This house needs a manual. There is a serious daily/winter/summer maintenance items to remember.
Last week the boiler cracked and broke. Luckily if we were home to attend to the water levels every hr we could keep it running. We did have to shut it off overnight. It was not so horrible, but it was scary and not warm. This week is NEW BOILER WEEK! We knew it was old, we knew it was coming. Just wish it wasn't 7 degrees when it happened.
I captured some pictures for memories. We are in essence removing history from the house.

This is the original list of what pipes go where. This still pertains to our current boiler.
We could keep the old boiler where it is. We don't need the space. But it's huge and the pipes are a little corroded. It is from 1920's. They will be sledgehammering and removing from the vicinity.
There have been three boilers in this house. Three boilers in almost 100 years. that's pretty good in my opinion. I will be 70 years old when the new one breaks. If we can just get through the non-heat days of the week SMOOTH sailing!

All the history in your house is so fascinating. You should definitely keep the boiler front and the pipe listing and after that.. think of all the room you'll now have down there! Not that you are really wanting for space though...
